Photomonitoring

In December 2007, Sonoma Ecology Center (SEC) staff visited the C. and S. Rose home along Sonoma Creek, Adobe Canyon in Kenwood. The purpose of the visit was to obtain a baseline photomonitoring of the creek and surrounding vegetation at three sites on the Rose property. Two years later, in December 2009, SEC staff returned to photograph the same views at the same three sites again.

The 2007 and 2009 photographs are displayed below in pairs, with the 2007 baseline photographs on the left. Note the differences in both the creek channel and bank, and growth and changes of surrounding vegetation.

The SEC provides free-of-charge direction and assistance for the baseline monitoring. Afterward the homeowner should take photographs and document changes quarterly or after a large natural water event. If you are interested in having SEC staff provide you with direction for a photomonitoring baseline, contact Julie Jehly, Watershed Stewardship Coordinator, Sonoma Ecology Center at phone 707-996-0712 x115.

Monitoring Site 2

Heading further upstream on the property, this photo is looking downstream. Notice the willow growth in the 2009 picture!

Turning upstream and again facing west.

Monitoring Site 3

Now at the final site, looking west downstream.

Looking east upstream. Again, notice the native willow growth in 2009. The roots hold soil in place and reduce erosion.

The final site photograph looking east upstream. The willows in the 2009 photograph will thrive with the winter rains.
